The University of Sydney welcomes applications for an Associate Professor/Professor in Architectural Design (Education Focused) in theSydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
The Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning is the oldest of its kind in Australia and for over 100 years has been leading the way in teaching and research in built and digital environments. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education-focused academic positions. The positions are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, teaching, curriculum design, educational practice and innovation, as well as research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly recruited group of educators are recognised both internationally and within the university for their expertise in educational delivery and will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney.

The Associate Professor/Professor in Architectural Design (Education Focused)dedicates the majority of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (up to 70%), with a minimum of 20% research and 10% governance, service, and engagement. Additionally, you will mentor junior academics, providing advice on teaching methodologies, education research approaches, publications, and career advancement.
The rolewill drive pedagogical advancements, requiring commitment to research and scholarship in educational methodologies, technology, and pedagogical approaches within architecture to deliver high quality educational experiences and outcomes. It is geared towards scholars deeply engaged with teaching and learning of architecture committed to playing a pivotal role in education leadership, guiding the School, Faculty and University in strategic planning and setting educational goals.
The role will also participate in communities of practice with other education focused roles in the discipline, School, and University. Through engagement with industry and employers, the role will lead understanding and responsiveness to market trends.
About you
You will be recognised internationally as a leading expert in educational design and delivery, with a notable track record for enhancing student outcomes, pioneering educational innovations, and contributing to respected research in the field. You will have fostered deep partnerships within Architecture and be able to integrate these partnerships into curriculum and student learning.
Applicants should demonstrate the following criteria, and include a response to each of the Selection Criteria as part of their application:
- A completed PhD or higher degree in any field of architectural design, including structures and construction, or equivalent practice experience such as status as a Principal or Design Director in a recognized architectural or engineering firm
- Deep knowledge within any field of architectural design, including structures and construction
- Proven international standing demonstrated through original, innovative and distinguished contributions to practice, scholarship and/or research
- An established research practice and portfolio of achievement
- A strong dedication to educational leadership and teaching excellence,with a notable track record for enhancing student outcomes and pioneering educational innovations
- An established network of relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders with the ability to integrate these relationships to assist in curriculum development and student learning
- Demonstrated community service with significant contribution to governance and collegial life within the university, including undertaking significant administrative and/or committee positions.
Term and remuneration
The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis and will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
